| November 14- On the Mayflower |
|
After reading the book On the Mayflower, students experienced what it might have been like for children crossing the Atlantic on sailing ships hundreds of years ago. We labeled the different parts of a 17th century merchant ship and talked about the food, clothing, toys, and tools that the early colonists brought with them. "John Froggers," cookies made from an authentic recipe from that time, were given to everyone to taste.
We read the story On the Mayflower by Kate Waters.
Student correctly identifies items of clothing in the English colonists wardrobe: petticoats for women, breeches for men, stockings and garters for everyone!
Though many of the games played by the early colonists are familiar to us (tic-tac-toe, checkers, leap frog) the equipment they used and their names for the games were different(noughts and crosses, draughts, hop frog.)
