During this "blue moon" month, we revisited the flight of Apollo 11. It was 40 years ago that Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, an event worth noting. We began by reading Moonshot by Brian Floca. With compelling illustrations and simple language, the book took us back to those exciting times.
Life is different on board a rocket ship. Students mixed water with dehydrated powder for a snack as we talked about some of the challenges of eating in space.

We watched a short video of the actual moon walk. Click here to view one of the many videos available online.
We made and launched our own rockets. Students adjusted the angle of their shots, the shape and number of fins to increase the distance and control of their rockets' flight. Click here for directions to make your own straw rocket.

Visit NASA for more information about past, current or future space programs.
