The teacher in the book Math Curse states that you can think of everything as a math problem. We read the story and went on our own number hunt. 
For instance, what would a newspaper look like if there were no numbers? How would you list sports scores, temperatures, prices, etc? We compared the front pages of two different newspapers, one that didn't use numbers at all. 
We used sand to compare various sized containers. How many cups are in a half gallon, for example. 
Math shows up in places you might not expect. These repeating patterns are part of math also.
