As a tie in with the Susquehanna County Big Read, The Great Gatsby, this program introduced the group to jazz music, in particular to Duke Ellington who began his career in the 1920's. A large group of participants listened to the story Duke Ellington, written by Andrea Pinkney. We also sampled a selection of Duke Ellington recordings.

Then dance instructor Bobbi Jo Kelsey from Windwood Hill Dance Academy introduced us to the Charleston, a dance popular during the Jazz Age.
We got lots of practice telling our left foot from our right, doing double jumps, bees knees, and kicks. First we walked through the steps and then tried performing those steps to some rousing music.

Some of us caught on more quickly than others.
We even practiced our skills with partners.
After a strenuous session, most of us were ready for a rest.
